“During this era there were two “organized” music plans, one operated by Columbia Artists (a subsidiary of CBS Broadcasting) known as Community Concerts, and the other operated by the National Broadcasting Company as a subsidiary known as the Civic Music Association. The University of Oregon operated under the civic music plan. This plan differed radically from the traditional concept of concert organizations in that there were no reserved seats with everyone having an equal right to any available seat, the revenues came from “members” rather than season ticket holders, and in the case of the University of Oregon and other college and university towns, each member of the student body was eligible to attend any concert through use of his student body card. The students contributed an agreed sum from their student fees paid to the university.” -Source: Benton County Historical Society, History of CMA
Each September, the association would hold a campaign to sell “memberships” to community members for that season.

Civic Music Ass’n in Second Decade – “Ten seasons of concerts have rolled around and gone, and the Eugene and University Civic Music Association this week beings its 11th campaign year, selling fine music to the Emerald Empire. Already it is the largest audience of its kind in the country. This year, with addition of many more seats to McArthur Court, membership may go much higher.” – Source: Eugene Register Guard
