“A Eugene entrepreneur, whose name I forget, had a dream of opening a large nightclub and concert venue on W 11th near Chambers Street. He called it “The Stable”. It got it close to finished, even to the point of having tables, chairs, liquor glasses, ash trays and so on. Then he ran out of money and faced foreclosure before he could open. The owner contacted Gordon and asked if Elmac would be interested in opening and closing The Stable, all in one night. The deal was, no money, but we could invite anyone we wanted. So would he. Between us, we knew an awful lot of Eugenians, and we invited them all. We played for around four hours for hundreds of friends (who doesn’t like a free party?). At the end, the owner was giving away glasses and ash trays embossed “The Stable”. I bet some are still around on a dusty shelf, basement, or thrift shop. The empty building was around for years before finally being demolished in the early Eighties.” –Steve Pellegrin, 2015
